Long time no see!
Unfortunately, before I left for the biggest adventure on Earth, I didn’t manage to complete all the articles from Switzerland. There was so much to do around the Eco-Challenge that there wasn’t a minute left for my articles. But because I’m an average bright girl, I knew it and wrote a few articles beforehand and this is one of them. I’m still probably wading through mud with a bike on my back somewhere in the middle of the jungle on Fiji, but you can relax and read about Gstaad in western Switzerland.
There is probably nothing interesting about this small town at first sight. Not even at second sight. Third – still nothing. However, at the fourth sight, a few observing individuals might notice an “invisible” mirror house called Mirage, built by Doug Aitken.
It’s a work of art built on a meadow surrounded by mountains. All the walls of the house, both external and internal, are made of mirrors, creating perfect optical illusions. The outside walls reflect grass and mountains, so it actually blends into the landscape and therefore it’s not easy to find it. The last picture shows how it’s almost impossible to see it from far.
The house is easily accessible, and there’s no entry fee. You can visit it until January 2021, then it is likely to be relocated.
If you come here and you are a type of person who can appreciate a nice piece of art or is good at capture it on a camera, reserve a lot of time. You can easily spend two hours here and still be finding new angles. And if you are going to Switzerland in winter, it’s almost an obligation to visit Mirage House, because it looks even more epic under the snow!
